Thanks to Covid 19, today we all know of Netflix and Amazon Prime. Entertainment is now completely digital. We watch YouTube as per our wish. Its Video on Demand (VOD). The same segment is also called OTT or “Over The Top”. What that means is that videos are coming to you without using a Cable or a Satellite TV. Next there is User Generated Content (UGC) where people make short videos and upload them on the internet on apps like Instagram and TikTok. More on UGC soon. The last jargon that you need to know is Podcast. These are recorded voice files that you can listen to. Right now there are loads of bed time stories and a lot of books available in Podcasts.
So let’s start with movies and Web Series can be watched on Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hotstar, Zee5, SonyLIV, ALTBalaji, EROS NOW and a few others. All these have tens of thousands of hours of premium video content that can be watched in multiple languages. And to watch this content you need to pay Rs 30 to Rs 1000 per month depending on the quality and diversity of the content. All these apps have millions and some even have a billion downloaded from Google Play Store and Apple App Store. Recently, a few big and new movies were released on these platforms.
Next is the User Generated Content. The biggest names in this segment are YouTube, Facebook, Instagram and TikTok. And the big names in India are Takatak from MX Player, Hipi from Zee5, Bolo Indya, Roposo, Trell, Changari, Mitron, Hind, Rizzle, Josh by Daily Hunt and Moj by Sharechat. The commerce in this segment is a bit complicated. This segment is going to witness lots ups and downs in the next 6 months before the dust settles down. Many new players are expected to enter this segment in this time frame.
